86 grand national 3.8 turbo. Altinator only puts out 12. volts and isnt charging the batt. Had altinator rebuilt and tested twice. Checked all wiring and cant find a short. Whats next? I heard if the batt. light in the dash goes out the altinator wont charge, is this so?smileys/smiley7.gif

an altrernator should put out 14 volts , check wiht car running if it is not 14 volts maybe your alternator havent been rebuilt properly ,sometimes rebuilders or shops do not have the proper equipment to check the alternator they can only check voltage not amperage or the opposite so their test may indicate good but stil their is sometings wrong ,smileys/smiley14.gif

We found the problem! The regulator was not being turned on from the car to the alt. Their is a short in the car some where, specificly that one wire to the altinator. We instaled a constant regulator which eliminates that one wire, and feeds 14 volts all the time when runing. It cost about 50 bucks, but she runs hot as hell again!!!!smileys/smiley14.gif thanks for the input.
